vessels In a classical way, containers and vessels are used to store and save a variety of things. They have been accompanying humankind since primeval times und have always been very appreciated – irrespectively of their practical benefit.
Due to this manifoldness, they have become contemporary witnesses of materials, forms and cultures. Vessels are hollow pieces and broach the issue of internal and external space. A differentiation between the vessel’s content and its exterior environment results therefrom.
colour Until the 15th century, colour as material was not accorded importance at all; its main function was to mimic other materials onto the image area. The point was not to present colour as a particular material. Its relevance only has changed after the emergence of photography, when painting needed to set itself apart. William Turner and Vincent van Gogh were the first to depict the process of painting by the use of colour. Yet, it was Barnett Newman who emphasised colour as material by letting it trickle directly from the tube onto the image area without spreading it. It was this historical development of colour that caused me to use it as a material within the three-dimensional space: I am forming vessels from acrylic paint.
links constitute a vital element in my work. With selecting the linking materials their signification receives a connotated meaning. These materials can engage in a relationship of correspondence and generate an entirely new and specific meaning. The individual parts leave their integrity behind and are defragmented into new forms of originality.
materials determine by their nature the technique with which they will be wrought and shaped. The decision for the use of a certain material, which will become a work of art, does not only serve as a means to an end but it is also a component of various aspects, that is to say: different cultural, historical and art historical connotations, as well as personal expectations and experiences. Naturally, materials are loaded with these respective elements. They represent a crucial factor within my work.
